Scottish Landlord Blasts Dundee Council for Incompetence

By 2 min read • June 14, 2017

A Scottish landlord is taking Dundee Council to court over a row about rates on his properties. He says the council owes him more than £100k after they repeatedly billed him for rates that were not due. The landlord has described the council as “incompetent”. Graham Bradley told the local press that he has been forced to sue the council after repeated attempts to sort out the problem have come to nothing.

“I’ve tried everything I can to sort the issues with them — I’ve written letters, held meetings and spoken to councillors but unfortunately it will now be at the cost of taxpayers in Dundee,” Bradley says.

Landlord Charged Rates for Exempt Properties

He described how the council charged him for properties that were exempt under Scottish council tax law. In Scotland, houses occupied by students, condemned properties, and properties that are undergoing a program of renovation are exempt. However, council tax officials clearly didn’t follow their guidelines because they spent years chasing Mr Bradley over the unpaid bills.

Mr Bradley owns a number of residential and commercial properties in Dundee. He is also the chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses in Dundee and Angus, so he is used to dealing with councils.

He says he spent a considerable amount of time and effort trying to sort the problem out, including writing letters, organising meetings, and contacting local councillors, but to no avail.
