Making Tax Digital for Income Tax — a guide for UK landlords
HMRC HAS BEEN IN TOUCH
If you’ve received a letter or message from HMRC saying you’ve been signed up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you may be wondering why — and what you need to do now.
The first step is to check the information HMRC has used to sign you up. After that, you’ll need to make sure your property records are being kept digitally and get ready for your upcoming quarterly updates.
That’s where Landlord Vision can help.
Whether your records are already up to date or you have a few months to catch up on, we can help you get set up and ready for what comes next.
Landlord Vision is HMRC-recognised software built specifically for UK landlords.
WHY YOU’VE BEEN SIGNED UP
For the 2026/27 tax year, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies if your total qualifying income from self-employment and property is more than £50,000.
HMRC looks at your gross qualifying income before expenses, rather than your profit, when deciding whether you need to use MTD.
If HMRC has confirmed that you’ve been signed up, there are a few things you should do now.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NOW?
Start by signing in to your HMRC online account and checking the information HMRC has used to sign you up.
This is something you need to do yourself. Landlord Vision, your accountant or anyone acting on your behalf can’t confirm these details for you.
Once you’ve checked everything is correct, you can focus on getting your property records ready for MTD.
Making Tax Digital means keeping digital records of your property income and expenses. If you use the standard tax-year reporting periods, you’ll need to make sure your relevant digital records are up to date from 6 April 2026.
If you haven’t been keeping them digitally yet, that could mean several months of rent, expenses, receipts and transactions to organise.
Landlord Vision brings those records together in one place, so you can keep your property finances organised without relying on separate spreadsheets and systems.
For landlords using the standard quarterly periods, your next MTD quarterly update is due 7 November 2026.
If HMRC has only recently signed you up and your digital records aren’t ready yet, now is the time to get them organised rather than leaving everything until the deadline.
NEXT QUARTERLY UPDATE DUE
7 November 2026
This update covers the period from 6 April to 5 October 2026. If your digital records aren’t ready yet, now’s the time to organise them.
You shouldn’t have to change the way you run your entire property business just to meet a new tax requirement.
